Survey mode

Demographic, clinical history and family information were obtained by a trained research nurse in an interview and included family structure, social circumstances current and at age 11 years, history of diseases and current medication, family history of diseases and use of alcohol and tobacco. The nurse also administered questionnaires on intake of specific foods, social support available and social networks, laterality, interests and activities, disabilities, quality of life, NEO personality schedule, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the 36 item Short Form health survey.

A clinical examination was conducted by the research nurse who collected anthropometric data, 6 m walk time, balance, chair rising, sitting and standing blood pressure, ECG, lung function, and a blood sample.

A psychologist administered 6 cognitive tests: the Mini-Mental State Examination, the National Adult Reading Test of correct pronunciation of unfamiliar words of irregular pronunciation, Raven’s Standardised Progressive Matrices of non verbal reasoning, the WAIS Digit Symbol Test of mental speed and WAIS Block Design Test of spatial ability, the Uses for Objects test of executive functions and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test of verbal memory and learning.
